Developing a rock breaker prototype with JCB
Our partnership with JCB began with genset canopies. It has now grown into attachments: together with JCB, Excava is developing a prototype rock breaker for the construction sector.
From canopies to attachments
Excava started working with JCB on light fabrication, building genset canopies that JCB exports all over the world. Within six months of launch we were producing more than 200 canopies a month, and in December 2024 JCB India recognised our team with its Best Overall Performance award.
That track record opened the door to heavier work. Rock breakers are among the toughest attachments on a construction site. They take constant impact and vibration, so the fabrication, welding and machining behind them have to be right the first time.
How we approach a prototype
Every new part at Excava follows the same path, and the rock breaker is no different:
- Requirements and drawings: we start from the customer’s CAD data and performance targets.
- Material procurement: plate and components are sourced to specification.
- Prototyping: parts are cut, formed, welded and machined in our heavy fabrication plant.
- Testing and inspection: dimensions are checked on our CMM with 3D scanner, and the prototype is tested against the agreed targets.
- Client approval: only once the customer signs off do we plan for series production.
Built on our attachments experience
Attachments are where Excava began. Our first project was localising a vibro ripper for a Korean client, and since then we have built buckets, hanger brackets and heavy fabrications of up to 2.5 tonnes for customers in India and abroad. The rock breaker prototype brings that experience together with the partnership we have built with JCB.
